The inscription is written in the Ionic alphabet, dated to the first third of the 5th c. BCE. On the same surface there are traces from the feet of a more than life-size bronze statue of the athlete. The statue and the inscription commemorate the victory of Kallias in the pankration which he won at the 77th Olympiad in 472 BCE (cf. Pausanias V.9.3; VI.6.1 (text 158); Andokides IV.32). They also include the sign of painter Mikon (cf. text 135 and 157). The inscribed basis was found in Olympia on the 27th of January 1877, north of the Philesios basis, but not in its original place. The Philesios basis was found in situ 32 m. east of the Zeus temple in Olympia (on which see IvOlympia no. 248, p. 364). Also, POxy 222, 1.26 (= B.P. Grenfell and A.S. CE, containing a list of Olympic victors of the years 480-468 and 456-448 BCE. Bibliography The Kallias inscription was first published in W. Dittenberger, M. Fränkel, R. Weil and G.
